May 27, 2009
Donors, members, supporters, and friends, the LEADER Fund would like to bring greetings to you, your family and your friends. We sincerely thank you for your contributions and appreciate all the support we have gotten from our members, supporters on the ground in Liberia , and especially our donors.
At this time, we would like to take an opportunity to update you on all our efforts and to inform you of our upcoming endeavors. These activities can be characterized into six (6) key items, namely:
1. The Liberia National Red Cross (LNRC): Funding a project & Memorandum of Understanding
2. Sackie Nyanquoi
3. Assistance to Burn Victims
4. Board Elections
5. Walkathon
6. Fundraising
1. LNRC: Funding a Project & development of a Partnership.
Due to the multiple incidents of natural disasters that have occurred over Liberia’s very recent past, the LEADER Fund has been in continuous discussions with the Liberian National Red Cross (LNRC) to find out what our organization could do to lend a hand. Our intentions were two-fold, to formalize our relationship with the LNRC and to have the LNRC identify projects to be funded by the LEADER Fund. Thus far we have succeeded in meeting both objectives:
LEADER Fund and Liberian National Red Cross Partnership: January/2009
In an effort to maximize the mission of the LEADER Fund, we are pleased to note we have entered into a partnership with the Liberian National Red Cross (LNRC). It is our hope this formal relationship will benefit those Liberians who have been affected by a natural disaster or emergencies through utilizing the complimentary services of both the LEADER Fund and the LNRC. The LNRC has, over the years, provided desperately needed assistance to Liberians for decades, theirs is a thankless and tireless unending effort; to that, we are very proud to have aligned ourselves with this organization. It is our hope to have a long and harmonious relationship with them.
Liberian Red Cross Project - Naweh /Bong County: January/2009
As you may know our country was recently devastated by an infestation of caterpillars. These caterpillars infected crops and sources of drinking water. The LNRC has sent us a proposal for one project geared towards providing safe drinking for a district of Bong County. They plan to construct a hand pump which would provide safe drinking water for approximately 650 persons whose water supply was infected by caterpillars. The LEADER Fund has promised $500.00 dollars to facilitate this project.
2. Assistance to Burn Victim Sackie Nyanquoi: November/2008
Early in the morning of October 3rd, 2008, Sackie Nyanquoi had acid viciously poured over his body during an armed robbery. Through numerous calls, emails, and letters, to the victims’ caretakers, doctors, supporters on the ground and the authorities, we have been able to get significant information about his situation, including a medical report. The LEADER Fund has been mounting a national effort to find an organization or doctor that can sponsor the cost of the medical services Sackie will need to have some restoration. Our last updates tell us he is a patient of the John F. Kennedy Center in room 218A ICU. His condition is severe and the doctors say he is in desperate need of plastic surgery. His parents are not able to afford the cost of this. In the interim, we sent a modest amount of $200.00 to the family to help with day to day expenses.
3. LEADER Fund made donation of $200.00 to Pennsylvania Family :
December/2008
In December 2008, a grave tragedy struck the Liberian community when 7 persons perished in a fire; two men, a woman, a teen aged girl, a one year old baby and two other children lost their lives to an explosive fire caused by a kerosene heater. The LEADER Fund, moved to lend a hand to the surviving families, made a donation of $200.00 to assist with the funeral arrangements.
4. Board Elections
It takes significant dedication of time, effort, and energy to be involved with a non-profit on a total volunteer basis. Given the numerous challenges we all face with maintaining a full time job and take care of all our personal affairs, we would like to applaud the efforts of Dawosue Kennedy (Treasurer), Toyuwa Harris (Asst. Secretary), and Joseph Baysah (Secretary General) for their tenure on the LEADER Fund’s Board of Directors. However, due to other pressing and time consuming obligations, these three dedicated individuals can no longer fulfill their obligations to the LEADER Fund. Given the preceding, the LEADER Fund informed the public and members of its intention to hold elections. The LEADER Fund looked for new Board Members with expertise and skills in non-profit fundraising and work experience, marketing, technology, and high level corporate experience coupled with a strong desire to help others. Our elections were held from March 17th – 18th, 209. We are happy to announce our newest board members include: Milpha Blamo, Morris Koffa, Peggy Mathis, Decontee Koffa and Doctor William Hare. We are so very excited to have them join us because we believe they will infuse our organization with innovative and exciting ideas that should take the LEADER Fund to the next level.
5. Walkathon
The LEADER Fund has identified a walkathon as its primary fundraising and awareness activity. We are currently in the process of planning the walkathon, so called the Walk for our Brethren, is scheduled for October 3rd, 2009. The goal of this fund raiser is to raise $6,000.00. Such a venture requires significant effort in the areas of coordination, procurement, research, filing government documents, follow-up, etc. We are in dire need of assistance to accomplish this major ambitious project. In this light, we are looking to the public to render us the maximum assistance they can give by offering their time, ideas, donations, and expertise in order for us to successfully achieve our goal.
6. Fundraising
In order for the LEADER Fund to be successful in any of the previous activities, we need some basic funding to cover the operational expenses. In this light, we are asking every person out there to generously contribute a minimum of $20 to our cause. Contributions can be made three different ways:
- Online at http://leaderf.org/Sackie_Nyanquoi.html
- Directly to our SunTrust Bank account # 1000063798150 ; or
- Mailed to:
Liberia Emergency And Disaster Relief Fund, Inc
10915 Melwood Park Place
Upper Marlboro, MD 20772.
We are very aware that these are tough economic times, however, in order to achieve our objectives, we have to reach out to those humanitarians who are kind of heart and can empathize with those who are impacted by emergency situations or disasters. Additionally, we are striving to develop an organization that will be financially agile to respond to the numerous instances that ultimately occur in our developing situation with a lack of infrastructure. Typically, the most impact is made in the first 24-72 hours of disasters or emergencies and we are preparing the LEADER Fund to be an organization that can respond with such a short turnaround.
Finally, we would like to again thank you for taking the time to read our update. If you aren’t fully aware of our organization, please visit our website, www.LEADERf.org and review our mission, objectives, and other documents. We appreciate your interest and request that you demonstrate your concern with a minimum contribution of $20.
Sincerely,
Isaac Vah Tukpah, Jr.
