    Heavy rains have caused flooding in various coastal cities in Liberia. Hundreds of homes and other buildings have been destroyed resulting in homelessness for a significant number of people. Below are some articles that reference these disasters.

    "Hundreds of people living in parts of Bushrod Island, just outside of Monrovia, on Monday were badly hit by floods created by an upsurge of water, which overflowed the banks of the St. Paul River; leaving residents strangulated in their homes as well as being deprived of tangible properties and personal belongings. The St. Paul River overflowed its banks Sunday night due to the heavy downpour of rain."

    "19 AUGUST 2008 | GENEVA -- Rising flood waters across West Africa are intensifying health risks for millions of people, and adding to the impact of the food price crisis. International aid is needed as heavy rains forecast to last until September could exacerbate health threats for conditions including malaria, diarrhea and other potentially fatal communicable diseases.

    "West Africa's annual floods bring with them not only the threat of vector-borne and communicable diseases, but it further endangers the lives of people already malnourished by the food price crisis," said Dr Eric Laroche, Assistant Director-General of WHO's Health Action in Crises Cluster."


  • Destruction of nine homes in Bardeh Wleh

    "It may be recalled that between 27 July and 4 August 2007, rising tides and ocean surge led to the destruction of nine homes in Bardeh Wleh, a fishing village on the Atlantic coast of Buchanan in Grand Bassa County. The sea displaced 135 mainly Ghanaian fishermen and their families and destroyed 22 houses. During the same period, a rise in the Mechlin River in District #2, Grand Bassa County flooded Kpor Jimmy, Compound #2 and five villages that lie along the riverbanks. The floods damaged four houses and flooded several others. On 27 July, heavy rains caused the Du and Ben River and the Yor Creek in Margibi County to overflow their banks. The resultant floods destroyed three houses, damaged two houses and led to the displacement of 16 persons in Bassa Community and Mandingo Quarter in Kakata."
