"19 AUGUST 2008 |
GENEVA -- Rising flood waters across West Africa are intensifying
health risks for millions of people, and adding to the impact
of the food price crisis. International aid is needed as heavy
rains forecast to last until September could exacerbate health
threats for conditions including malaria, diarrhea and other
potentially fatal communicable diseases.
"West Africa's
annual floods bring with them not only the threat of vector-borne
and communicable diseases, but it further endangers the lives
of people already malnourished by the food price crisis,"
said Dr Eric Laroche, Assistant Director-General of WHO's
Health Action in Crises Cluster."

"It may be recalled that between 27 July
and 4 August 2007, rising tides and ocean surge led to the
destruction of nine homes in Bardeh Wleh, a fishing village
on the Atlantic coast of Buchanan in Grand Bassa County. The
sea displaced 135 mainly Ghanaian fishermen and their families
and destroyed 22 houses. During the same period, a rise in
the Mechlin River in District #2, Grand Bassa County flooded
Kpor Jimmy, Compound #2 and five villages that lie along the
riverbanks. The floods damaged four houses and flooded several
others. On 27 July, heavy rains caused the Du and Ben River
and the Yor Creek in Margibi County to overflow their banks.
The resultant floods destroyed three houses, damaged two houses
and led to the displacement of 16 persons in Bassa Community
and Mandingo Quarter in Kakata."
